How to do Hair Spa at Home in Just 5 Steps

Treatments using exotic oils and super serums are marriage made in heaven for thinning, heated tresses during the year

What is Hair Spa all about?

If you’re going in for a hair spa at Face and Body the Stylist would first take a look at what kind of hair you have, its quality, strength , texture and quantity. You are then offered suitable remedies and packs. Face and Body also has a protein and a silk treatment for hair. The idea is to rejuvenate and protect the hair. A power serum can be mixed with the conditioner and massaged onto the hair. I recommend using Oliplex three step process. Olaplex includes a patented active ingredient that works on a molecular level to seek out broken bonds in the hair that are caused by chemical, thermal and mechanical damage. We use Oliplex to restore compromised hair or add it to another service to provide the ultimate breaking insurance.

OLIPLEX is very beneficial and can penetrate and mend the hair shaft and restore moisture. Oliplex is applied to the hair and massaged well. After a rinse and a deep relaxing massage you are ready to have your hair blow dried by your stylist so you leave the salon looking and feeling fabulous.

5 Steps to do Hair Spa at Home

The belief in the therapeutic powers of mineral waters dates back to many centuries. The word ‘spa’ has its roots in ancient Roman & Greek civilizations which basically stands for a healing bath in mineral-rich spring water. A hair spa is not just about pampering the hair with a massage. It also provides nutrients to the hair, with a variety of packs. The five essentials are: hair oil, massage, shampoo, conditioner & hair mask.

1. Massage your scalp: This is the first step to start a hair treatment at home. Warm up some coconut oil or olive oil. Massage your head gently. This increases blood circulation and boosts hair growth.

2. Steam the hair: Dip a towel in warm water and squeeze the excess water out. Wrap the towel around the hair. This allows the oil to penetrate deep into the scalp. Do this for about 5-6 minutes.

3. Wash your hair: Now, wash the hair with a mild Joico shampoo. Use only luke warm water as hot water is harmful to the hair roots and irritates the scalp.

4. Apply Joico conditioner. Or try a paste of grated beetroot to which hibiscus powder has been added. The hibiscus flower powder is a great base and is rich in iron and other vitamins. Rinse it off after half an hour with just warm water and no shampoo.

5. Lastly, a hair mask: The last step is crucial as it seals in the nourishment. We recommend a Joico Mask but you may like to try making this mask at home. In a bowl, mix two eggs, honey and some coconut oil. You can add a ripe banana to this – banana is a hair softener. You can also use olive oil instead of coconut oil. Leave the mask on for 20 minutes, then rinse with your Joico shampoo.

That’s it. You have successfully completed a home hair spa therapy at home in just 5 simple steps.

We recommend repeating this process every two months to ensure healthy, soft & shiny hair.

If you are time poor then pop into Face and Body at 298 Titirangi Road and we will “pamper your Hair” for you whilst you relax.

However you elect to treat you hair – please do it regularly .

Waxing Aftercare

Waxing is one of the most popular and affordable types of hair removal. Both men and women can enjoy the benefits of having smooth, hair free skin. However we must maintain this smooth, hairless skin. Waxing aftercare is essential to prevent unsightly ingrown  hairs, bacterial infections, scarring, itching and having to resort to using antibiotics.

What are in grown hairs and what can I do to prevent them?

Ingrown hairs form when dry skin cells block the surface opening for hairs growing back after shaving, waxing, electrolysis or any other form of hair removal. Failing to grow out of the skin, the hairs curl inside the follicle underneath the skin and the resulting foreign body reaction causes an unsightly infectious bump. Both women and men suffer from ingrown hairs. To prevent ingrown hairs from forming you must follow the appropriate homecare advice:

Exfoliation:
  1. Removes the dead skin cells from the top layer of the skin.
  2. A coarse dry body mitt can be used on dry skin after waxing before showering each day. Dry brushing is a must.
  3. This needs to be done at least 2-3 times weekly, start 3 days after your waxing treatment.
Moisturise:
  1. This nourishes and protects the skin from excessive flaking or irritation.
  2. This should be done every day. (Manuka Honey Hand & Body Cream).
  3. By nourishing the skin the hair is able to grow out onto the skin’s surface.
Do’s
  1. Exfoliate the skin at least 2-3 times a week.
  2. Moisturise every day using Manuka Honey Hand & Body Cream.
  3. Apply Tend Skin on cotton wool to dry skin of any ingrowns occur. Daily for up to a week.
Don’ts
  1. Exercise for at least 48 hours after your waxing treatment. Sweat is a breading ground for bacteria!
  2. No sun/sunbed exposure over the waxed area for at least 48 hours; it will burn severely.
  3. Do not touch the area with fingers for at lease 48 hours afterwards to avoid cross infection.
  4. No harsh soaps or acid based  products to be applied as these will irritate freshly waxed skin.
  5. No saunas, public pools, hot spas or hot showers for at least 48 hours afterwards to avoid cross infection. P.S. Cooler showers are fine.
Men:

Men’s skin is thicker than women’s and they sweat more than women also. Therefore when it comes to waxing; homecare is essential. At Face & Body we strongly recommend that all our male waxing clients should go on the sunbed for at least 3 minutes after their waxing treatment. The ultra violet light is very antibacterial – so going on the sunbed for a short period of time will not burn or tan the skin but kill any bacteria in the open hair follicle and prevent men from getting folliculitis. Men should be using the coarse back mitt to prevent ingrown hairs and must also follow the same routine as women.

Dry brushing or rubbing on dry waxed skin (pre shower not in the shower) is essential. Start 3 days after your wax.

Brush vigorously to remove the unwanted dry skin cells on the surface of your skin that can create blockages in the top of the follicle. This will prevent hair from growing into the skin.

Tend Skin is especially good for around your neck and chin area where the combination of shaving and business-shirt collars rubbing create itching and ingrown hairs.

Restylane Treatment

Natural Beauty Made In Sweden

If you are looking to enhance your looks with a completely natural substance which achieves a visible, long-lasting esthetic result, Restylane is made for you. Whether you’re looking for defined facial contours, fuller lips, or smoothened facial lines, Restylane lets you bring out the best in yourself – instantly and naturally.

What’s more, Restylane allows you flexibility. You can choose to have a single treatment, on your lips for example. Or, you could have your lips treated and lines smoothed out – at the same time. As Restylane degrades over time, you have the freedom to do what you want, when you want. You are always in control of your looks – that’s the beauty of Restylane.

Natural on the Inside

Restylane is a crystal-clear gel form of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body. Hyaluronic acid holds water, hydrating and giving volume to the skin. As we get older the production of our natural hyaluronic acid diminishes. A simple injection of Restylane replenishes the lost volume an improves your looks by enhancing your profile, creating fuller lips, and smoothing out lines and wrinkles.

Restylane adds volume to your skin and still leaves your face with a natural expression. Restylane is non-permanent and is absorbed naturally over time. This means that you can choose when to have further treatment to maintain the effect.

Natural on the Outside

In less time than a lunch break, you can have a Restylane treatment and then get on with your usual life. There’s no need for any pre-testing and you’ll see the result instantly. The effect will typically last 6 months to over a year. The length of time Restylane lasts is specific to each individual, and the area treated.

Already, since its launch in 1996, Restylane has been used safely in over 2 million treatments, in more than 70 countries worldwide – so you can be reassured that it has a proven safety track record.

Treatment

Dermal fillers are used to soften and freshen ones appearance and thereby boost confidence with minimal time required out of your busy lifestyle.

Treatment with Restylane involves an injection technique to correct lines, folds and wrinkles. Restylane can also be used to enhance lips and create a fuller lip. It is relatively safe and simple non-surgical procedure.

Pre-Treatment Requirements

A full medical history will be taken prior to treatment and you will have an opportunity to discuss the treatment in full with the doctor. You will need to complete a consent form before treatment.

Uses
  1. Fills out lines, furrows, folds and wrinkles of the face but is not recommended for the eye-lid area
  2. Can be used to enhance and create fuller, more pouting lips
  3. Provides a freshened appearance
Duration of Effect

Treatments need to be repeated approximately twice yearly to maintain the desired effect. After the initial treatment it may be necessary for you to have a second top-up treatment to achieve the desired results. The longevity of the effect depends on the area treated and your skin type.

Adverse Treatment Responses

The common injection related side effects are localized and transient, and may include one or more of the following responses:

  1. Swelling /Redness and/or slight bruising
  2. Occasionally itching, pain/tenderness, or increasing swelling have been noted
  3. Accidental needle placement into or through a blood vessel…temporary skin discoloration and scab formation which may result in a scar
  4. Very small chance of granuloma formation, which may require excision.
Cautions

DO NOT HAVE treatment if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, have severe multiple allergic reactions or anaphylaxis, or planning or have had laser or deep chemical peels within three months and if you have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring.

Red Vein Home Care Advice

Using a High Frequency Current, a very effective permanent method of removing dilate capillaries – also known as red veins, thread veins and broken capillaries.

Our method utilizes the benefits of a high frequency current to minimise discomfort that works by quarterizing blood vessels.

During your Red Vein consultation your therapist, who is a qualified Thermologist, will give you full details of your treatment. To ensure the complete success of your Red Vein treatments it is essential that these home care procedures are followed precisely to prevent the risk of infection or scarring.

For the first 24 hours after treatment:
  • Apply a gel to the area 2-3 times daily.
  • No swimming in public pools or spa pools.
  • DO NOT TOUCH AREA WITH FINGERS.
  • If you have any concerns about a skin reaction do not hesitate to contact your therapist immediately.
Between treatments and up to 14 days after:
  • No sun on the area.
  • DO NOT PICK ANY OF THE HEALING CRUSTS THAT FORM (Scarring can occur). It will take between 4-14 days for freckle-like crusts to appear and naturally fall off, depending on how well you heal.
  • Avoid makeup and other skin care routines i.e. Cleansing to ensure there is no friction on that area that could cause freckle-like crusts to tear of prematurely.

Permanent Hair Removal By Electrolysis

In Electrolysis is the method of permanent hair removal. As the name implies, this method uses an electric current to destroy the root of each individual hair. As hair is a very strong structure it is not possible to totally destroy the root with one treatment only. Permanency is only progressively achieved as too high a current will cause scarring. It is therefore normal to expect regrowth for a certain length of time. Each case is entirely individual and many factors decide the ultimate length of time it takes to “cure” a case. These include:

  • The type of hair (fine or coarse)
  • Skin type (dry, moist or sensitive)
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Frequency and length of treatments
  • The extent of the problem
  • Hereditary factors
  • Whether any medication is involved
  • Extent of client “plucking” of hair

Our therapists offer a test patch and a consultation service at which time the client’s case can be assessed, the treatments can be fully explained and the client can ask any questions. Electrolysis is a complex subject and requires knowledge, skill, accuracy, integrity and experience on the part of the therapist.

The technique of electrolysis involves inserting a fine conducting probe into the hair follicle, alongside the hair. The current is then applied for 2-10 seconds during which time the cells forming the root of the hair are destroyed. The hair is then lifted out with tweezers. Remaining cells that have not been destroyed will form a new hair which will again be treated. Gradually the hair will become slower growing, fairer and finer and finally will cease to re-appear altogether. It should be understood however, that only hairs that already exist can de destroyed but new growth cannot be prevented from forming if an individual is genetically predisposed to excess hair growth or if there is a hormonal imbalance. In such cases the problem can only be controlled by electrolysis treatments. Medical advice and help should also be sought.

After Care Advice Post-Electrolysis
  • Must apply an antiseptic gel to the area 3 times a day for 3 days – use a fresh cotton bud each time to apply the gel.
  • Do not swim in public pools as the area could get infected.
  • Do not heat the area excessively in the first 3 days with:
    • Spa baths
    • Sun Rays, Sun beds – always wear sun-block
    • Hot Showers
    • Busy Physical Exercise
  • Picking and touching will introduce a cross infection and the area could scar as it heals.
  • Leave the little “brown tops” or scabs on the area as they are encouraging complete healing. If you pick them off you may be left with scar tissue!

Eye Care

Often referred to as the window to our soul, our eyes are the focal point of our face and help to give its own special beauty. This fragile, delicate area is often the first area to show our general state of health from external aggressors to internal disorders which can result in the appearance of puffiness, dark circles and dehydration which leads to fine lines and wrinkles.

Latest Research From Paris Shows Us That:
    • The aging process begins around the age’s 20-25
    • Dark circles appear at around age 18
    • Wrinkles and puffiness appear at around age 30
    • The eyelids blink every 6 seconds
    • The skin of the eye contour:
      • loses 6% of its thickness every 10 years
      • is 5 times thinner than the rest of the face
      • there are sebaceous glands independent of hair follicles that open directly onto the skins surface,
        the majority being inactive.
How And Why Do These Conditions Occur?

Wrinkles and their development can be due to a number of sources, some of the more common reasons are due to the skin of the eye contour being very fine and fragile, the 10,000 or more blinks per day, repeated contractions of the muscles for example smiling, the skin becomes dryer, diminished collagen production, a reduction microcirculation, smoking, UV rays and squinting all these factors increase the appearance of premature wrinkles.

Loose Skin results from a reduction in the support network in the skin, collagen production slows down and the elastin fibres become disorganised. The skin becomes thin looses it’s elasticity and slackens.

There are two main causes of Puffiness:
  1. Water Retention where excess fluid in the tissues and the accumulation of lymph is linked to slowing circulation. This condition is common at night when lying down as muscular activity (which moves lymph along) and microcirculation slows down. Re-establishing hydration and stimulating microcirculation will improve this condition.
  2. Squinting, or blinking and general eye movements can cause small fat clusters or small cushions of fat which are located behind the eyeball to move down and form small protrusions or eye bags. The fine delicate skin under the eyes is incapable of holding it back. This type of puffiness is generally heredity, and becomes worse with age and the loss of skin firmness. Surgery is the best option for this form of eye puffiness.

Dark circles are not linked to ageing but poor blood and lymphatic circulation, and is a condition seen in people with a more olive skin tone. circles appear mainly in the corner of the eye as this is where circulation starts. When circulation is bad, the pigments in charge of toxins build up in the connective tissue. As the skin is very fine and often transparent, the dilated veins become more visible. There are various reasons as to why this occurs, one of the main culprits is smoking as it affects blood circulation, other factors include hereditary, renal and thyroid problems and conditions that can aggravate the conditions are fatigue, dehydration, stress, allergies, caffeine and hormone replacement and oral contraceptives.
