An Introduction To Understanding Alpha And Beta Hydroxy Acids

hese products are power products/boosters and go into the deep skin layer.

“Like a fertiliser grows a great garden – Alpha Beta grows great skin cells”.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Key Indredients:

Glycolic: sugar cane
Malic Acid: apples/pears
Citric Acid: oranges/lemons
Lactic Acid: milk & fermented foods

Properties:

AHA’s dissolve the “glue” that binds dead skin cells. The acids cause cells to swell and burst then break away exposing newer cells beneath.

Clinical effects of AHA’s help to modify wrinkles & photo ageing due to improved skin thickness and new collagen formation.

Beta Hydroxy Acids

Key Indredients:

Salicylic Acid: helps reduce blemishes, blackheads, whiteheads anti-irritant, anti-inflammatory derived from Aspirin (acetyl salicylic acid)

Properties

Lipid soluble not water soluble – can penetrate into follicles to exfoliate inside active sites of blemishes as well as the surface of the skin (to unclog pores).

Benefits of Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids

  • smoothes fine lines/wrinkles
  • smooth, even texture
  • improves hydration
  • speeds up cell turnover
  • reduces age spots
  • improves acne/congested skin by unblocking pores

Skin Types That Will Benefit Most

  • dry skin
  • pigmented skin
  • sun damaged skin
  • oily/acne prone skin
  • premature aged skin
  • dull, devitalised
  • congested and sluggish

Spray Tan Home Care Advice

Our spray tan will help give you the healthy look that comes with a beautiful tan. Perfect for any skin type, even that person who has freckles or sun burns easily.

All tanned in less than 15 minutes. Faster and much safer than a real tan

Our tan has a pleasant fresh clean citrus-like aroma and is not orange in colour! Enjoy.

The wonderful aspect of spray tan is you can enjoy it at any time of the year: which means that you can look gorgeous, healthy and glowing whenever you want. Call us if you have a night out so you want to look your best, or maybe it’s your wedding, or perhaps you just don’t want to look the whitest on the beach .

If you want your tan for a special occasion it is best to have your spray tan at least two days before. For instance if you are getting married on Saturday then have your Spray Tan on Thursday.

This allows for any white patches to be taken care of before your big day it also gives the tan a day to settle, therefore much softer in appearance

1. Before Your Spray Tan
  •  This will ensure an even application ,extend the life of your tan and assists the tan in fading evenly. Shaving and /or waxing should be completed at least 24 hours prior to your tan application to avoid skin irritation.
  • Don’t wear any make up, moisturiser, deodorant or perfume for that day of your tan application as this can prevent the tanning solution colouring your skin.
  • Wear loose dark casual clothing and flip flops on your feet.
  • Bring in dark underwear or a bikini if you would like to keep your modesty, otherwise for 1/2 Body Tans we will supply you with a towel to wrap around you.
  • A 1/2 Body Tan includes your arms, décolleté and top half of your back plus your legs from half way up your thigh to your ankles.
2. Spray Tan Information on Developing Your Tan
  • Ideally keep the tan on for between 6-8 hours for fair skin and 8-12 hours for all other skin types so it can fully develop before you shower.
  • Wear loose dark clothing during developing time. Tight clothing, bra straps and strappy sandals will remove tan by rubbing against the skin.
  • Most tanning lotions will wash out of anything except leather so beware if you have a leather sofa/chair. Put a throw-over on the leather before you sit down on them.
  • Do not shower, swim or exercise for at least 6 hours after your application as perspiration and water removes all trace of the tan.
  • Again-Keep well away from rain drops : here’s the good news, you must not wash the dishes!
3. Spray Tan Information on Enjoying Your Tan
  • Body Moisturise daily to avoid patchy or flaky skin and to prolong the life of your tan.
  • If you go swimming remember there is chlorine in the water and this will fade your tan.
  • It makes sense, the more showers and baths you have the lighter your tan will become.
  • A spray tan will not protect you from the sun, so remember to wear a sun factor cream/lotion when you are sunbathing.
  • Your tan should last for between 5-7 days.
4. Price- Full Tan $ 49.00 and Half Tan $35.00

Keep The Flu At Bay, The Natural Way

Based on an article in Winter Wonderland, June 5, 2011 By Susan Edmunds.

Winter is almost here meaning it’s a great time to remind ourselves of the basics when it comes to colds and flu’s to keep us all healthy and at work and University.

Although taking daily vitamins and having an annual vaccination are great ways to keep well, there are also more traditional methods that have been proven to help out.

Here are some hints for our Face and Body Team & Clients:
  • Reducing the amount of sugar in our diets. “It has been shown that sugar can compete for receptor sites on white blood cells, effectively blocking out the Vitamin C module and its immune enhancing activities.”
  • Having a fresh, healthy, colourful diet. This will help us to get the range of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals we need to resist infection.
  • Reducing stress in our daily lives. Stress, although often unavoidable can leave your immune system more vulnerable. Even though it is easier said than done, try to relax and defuse stress. Sleep is great and it is free.
  • Upping Vitamin D and Vitamin C intake. Most people respond well to vitamin C and it is recommended that people who feel like they are coming down with something take 1000mg up to four times a day but not with an oral contraceptive as it weakens its contraceptive actions!
  • A more natural ‘cure’ is the herb andrographis paniculata. This herb stimulates production of immune cells, which fight bacteria and viruses. It also has anti-inflammatory benefits making it great for sore throats, headaches and sore necks/backs. Start this at Easter weekend.
  • Olive Leaf extract – hones the immune system naturally. Start taking some in April through to September.
  • And of course the basics – washing hands, sneezing into tissues and regular exercise ; at least 30 minutes of exercise each day.

Bestow Beauty – Autumn Skin Care And How To Assist Your Facial Skin Hydration Levels At Home

Autumn is now upon us and the change from the warm, relaxed summer days to the cooler, frostier weather can be especially hard not only for our frozen toes, but also on our skin.  It’s easy to rug up in our winter woollies to fend off the cold snaps, but it’s harder to know how to effectively protect your skin.

Here are a few simple tips for looking after your skin during this time:

From the Outside

The warm humidity of summer makes it much easier for your skin to stay hydrated so in response it reduces its production of protective humectant chemicals.  It is just so easy for your skin to remain hydrated that it gets a bit lazy during these months.  But then the first cold snap arrives and with it the humidity in the atmosphere plummets.  This sends the lower layers of your skin into overdrive and it will being working double shifts to increase its production of humectants to boost your skin’s water holding ability.  Unfortunately, there is a delay in the production of the humectants and delivering them where they need to be.  This means your skin is very much at risk of becoming dry, tight and vulnerable during this period.

So what can you do to counteract this…

Your best defence is to get ‘soaking’ so you can provide that much needed moisture to the skin.

Simply fill your basin with warm water, immerse a cloth, wring it out and hold it to your skin for 20 seconds, then repeat. Then apply a layer of your favourite potion while your skin is still damp to lock in precious moisture.

From the Inside Out

Vitamin A foods keep our skin and mucous membranes strong and humid.  By boosting your intake of these foods you not only keep your skin looking beautiful but also protect yourself from colds and flu’s by making it harder for viruses to get past the physical barrier of your mucous membranes.

Foods rich is vitamin A are:

Eggs. Orange vegetables like pumpkin, carrot and kumara. Green vegetables like broccoli, brussel sprouts and parsley. Fruit such as dates, apricots, papaya, peach and banana. Berries such as blueberries, currants, raspberries, and blackcurrents.

Focus on increasing these foods in your diet to support your skin from the inside.

It is also worth going and getting a simple ‘taste test’ from your local pharmacy or health food shop to check if your zinc levels are adequate.  Zinc is an important mineral for the skin and it also makes sure that your vitamin A is able to be transported from your liver to your skin.

Bestow Beauty Oil and Ceramides

The protective outer layer of our skin contains many natural chemicals that help make it strong and resilient.  One of these families of chemicals, found in relatively high levels (up to 50%), is the ceramides, of which there are 11 different types.

One of these ceramides, ceramide-1-linoleate, has been found to be particularly important if you want to have beautiful, supple skin.  Unfortunately, during winter our levels of this vital ceramide drop and this can contribute to the lack lustre appearance of our skin.

The good news is that your Bestow Beauty Oil contains the essential ingredient your skin needs to boost its production of ceramide-1-linoleate!

So don’t forget to have your daily dose and if your skin isn’t feeling itself, boost your intake.

New product coming…

Watch this space!  We have a fabulous new product due to be released on to the market in June.

Roast Pumpkin and Lentil Dip

Ingredients

  • ½ cup of pumpkin, cut into cubes
  • ½ cup of red lentils, rinsed well
  • 2 tablespoons of Bestow Beauty Oil
  • ½ teaspoon of sea salt
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cumin toasted
  • ½ teaspoon tumeric
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • Black pepper or cayenne to taste

Method

Rinse lentils well and place in a pot on stove with 1 ¼ cups of cold water; bring to the boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook till soft (at least 20 minutes), scraping off any scum that rises to the surface. Remove from heat. Alternatively, drain a can of precooked red lentils. Meanwhile, roast pumpkin pieces in the oven until slightly browed. The garlic can also be roasted for a smoother flavour, otherwise just chop garlic finely to add in to the dip raw. Mash all ingredients together with a potato masher or place all ingredients in a blender and pulse till almost smooth but still a little chunky (depending on textural preference). Store in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Green Smoothies

When I was a little girl, eating my greens at dinnertime often came down to a battle of wills. My mother, a strong advocate for eating one’s greens, would force me to endure their bitter taste, and I would stubbornly refuse. It has taken me a few years, but I have come to find she was right.

Leafy greens are exceptionally good for our health. Their benefits are still being discovered, and lately they have seen a resurgence in popularity, fortunately for me in the form of a green smoothie.

These smoothies are quick and convenient and also boost the servings of vegetables I have everyday. The best part is the taste of the greens is masked by the fruit component in the smoothies. These smoothies are great, as unlike juices, they are a complete food, full of fibre.  The blending process makes the greens easy to digest, making it much easier for our bodies to access the nutrients they contain. They also have alkalising properties that counter the many foods we eat that make our bodies too acidic.

Green smoothies are a rich source of chlorophyll, which, research has shown, may possibly treat and prevent certain types of cancers, such as colon, skin and liver cancer. Another possible health benefit is its ability to aid in the healing of wounds, and fans of chlorophyll also claim that it helps purify the blood and enhances our immune system.

Green smoothies also contain loads of anti-oxidants and phytonutrients to promote good health, which some claim also help with weight loss. Some researchers also believe they aid by decreasing a person’s appetite through the action of a compound called thylakoid.  This might also be the reason many fans of these delicious drinks claim they help to reduce sugar and junk food cravings.

So why not include this delicious ritual in your day and do your health and your skin a favour!

Dermal Needling Expert Visits New Zealand Hosted By Margaret Walsh And Florence Barrett-hill

One of the world’s foremost Dermal Needling Specialists, Dr Lance Setterfield M.D., will be in New Zealand and Australia during February for a series of educational seminars.  This will be an opportunity for New Zealand therapists who are considering, or are already practicing the Dermal Needling (or rolling) modality, to learn more about this exceptional treatment option from an international expert on the subject.

Dr Setterfield’s visit is to not only educate, but to promote best practice procedures and techniques to the industry.  “With the plethora of needling devices flooding the market, so too is a good deal of marketing-based misinformation that is fostering less than optimal practices and results,” said Association Education Officer Margaret Walsh. “This is a similar situation that occurred during the popularization of IPL treatments.  We learned to our detriment that we can quickly lose credibility in the eyes of the public and authorities if we do not follow best practice procedures.”

Over the past four years, Dermal Needling (or rolling) has quickly become one of the most popular skin rejuvenation modalities of choice for many aware skin care practitioners around the world, and as a leading authority on the subject, Dr Setterfield travels the globe (as far away as Russia) to provide training for organizations and individuals seeking the best instruction in order to deliver optimum results.

Dr Setterfield’s own research (and that of other international experts) shows that the key to why needling is such an effective treatment modality is the healing response that the process stimulates.  “Dermal Needling is the only rejuvenation treatment that maximizes penetration of essential cell nutrients and maximizes release of growth factors associated with the positive aspects of wound healing simultaneously,” says Dr Setterfield.  “One of this modality’s major advantages is that it eliminates the risk of melanocyte heat injury and actually optimizes cell function, making it the ideal treatment for all skin types.”

Dr Setterfield’s journey to understanding this modality began in 2003, when he embraced the opportunity to combine the broad base of knowledge that his years of general practice had provided with the exciting new developments in

Anti-Aging Medicine. Over the ensuing years of using many types of rejuvenation modalities, he quickly came to the conclusion that, despite the initial positive results with these honored and popular modalities, in many cases there was something missing from the long-term results he expected.  In 2005, he decided to undertake his own clinical trials that included the use of the then expensive (US$850) dermal rollers. In the absence of financial pressure to use a specific laser or other thermal modality, he found that dermal rolling, in conjunction with selective topical applications, delivered exceptional results in a majority of his patients.

“I was prompted to explore the science behind the obvious success in my patients and decided to conduct detailed research.  Like most I initially believed that in order to stimulate collagen, the target in rejuvenation was the “fibroblast”.  However, all the evidence I discovered pointed to the “keratinocyte” as being one of the keys to success,” said Dr Setterfield.

During his research, of which much is presented in his 2010 book, “The Concise Guide To Dermal Needling,” he focused his attentions on the role keratinocytes play in scarless wound-healing, and in general, the types of growth factors in play during the wound-healing process.  “Combining my findings with results in some of my patients that were beyond expectation and that did not involve any injury to the depth of fibroblasts, I concluded that the best explanation is that needling not only spares the epidermis, but strengthens it.  Repeated injury of healthy keratinocytes leads to release of anti-fibrotic growth factors and optimizes cell-to-cell communication between keratinocytes, melanocytes, and fibroblasts. When these signals are boosted, fibroblasts differentiate to form normal collagen and greater amounts of hyaluronic acid, as seen in the ideal situation of embryo wound healing.”

Years later, we now understand why Dermal Needling has the ability to open up a whole new world to the professional beauty industry, and the possibility of healthy, vibrant skin is attainable for the many, instead of the few.
